Questions about Making Tax Digital

Not answered here? Ask Ana in writing: it's the quickest way to a clear reply.

Does Making Tax Digital for Income Tax apply to me?

It applies to sole traders and landlords who file Self Assessment, based on their qualifying income: the combined gross income from self-employment and property, before expenses.

HMRC has published the start dates: from 6 April 2026 for qualifying income over £50,000, from 6 April 2027 over £30,000, and from 6 April 2028 over £20,000. Always check the current rules on gov.uk, as HMRC can change them.

What changes under MTD?

You keep digital records in MTD-compatible software, send a summary update to HMRC every quarter, and submit a final declaration after the tax year ends, instead of a single annual return.

I'm a landlord with a few properties. Can you help?

Yes. Property income often has several income streams and many small transactions. We keep clear digital records per property where useful and prepare the quarterly figures from them.

Do I have to change software?

You need software that is compatible with MTD for Income Tax. We help you choose and set it up, usually Xero, and organise the workflow so the quarterly updates come from records that are already up to date.
